Catherine Morneau

I share my life between two beautiful regions, Quebec City and the municipality of Rivière Ouelle in Kamouraska. I have a master’s degree in “Counselling and Orientation” and a graduate degree in “Study of Artistic Practice”

My source of inspiration is the human adventure in these varied territories that shape our journey and colour our personal and collective history. I am fascinated by the transitions, passages, dualities, detours and returns that I observe as much in humans as in nature. I question myself about time that flies and takes root simultaneously, placing as a priority the urgency of inhabiting it and the legacy to bequeath.

Driven by materials and textures, I let myself be carried away by chance, without a plan, reworking the paint in a continual movement of construction and reconstruction. The diversity of square shapes impose themselves and jostle each other like a symbol of the anchoring of our identity. These “squares of self” bear witness to the strengths and fragilities that are present in the creation of a painting and in the journey of a life. The scratching reveals the imprint of a past emotion and bears witness to the history of the creation of the work.

The work and journey of Françoise Sullivan, Marcelle Ferron, or Joan Mitchell challenge me by the courage and audacity that characterize these women artists. They dared, cleared, questioned the obstacles and defied conventions.

I wish, through my artistic practice, to leave room for a space of sharing, of dialogue that invites others to reflect on their own aspirations. Art, a place to express, dream, be useful and inspire.
